Everything you need to know about the new 2018 Hyundai Kona

Hyundai caused quite a surprise this week by unveiling the new 2018 Hyundai Kona. It's not that the model wasn’t expected, but no one suspected that it would offer a fully electric version with 400 kilometers of range, making a direct competitor to the Chevrolet Bolt in the long-range, relatively affordable EV segment.

That said, the new 2018 Hyundai Kona’s targeted segment will be subcompact SUVs where its unparalleled choice of engines and unique Superstructure platform should allow it to stand out.

Two gas-powered engines for the 2018 Hyundai Kona

But before we talk about the electric version, let's take a look at the more traditional variants. The first will be powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine developing 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. This will be the entry-level model while Hyundai, true to form, will offer an optional turbo engine.

The latter is a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine developing 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, essentially the same engine that can be added as an option under the hood of the Hyundai Tucson. That said, the Kona’s engine should feature better performance thanks to a lower weight.

The new 2018 Hyundai Kona will be built on the new Hyundai Superstructure platform, consisting of 53 percent high-strength steel, which aims to improve comfort by reducing vibrations, improve performance thanks to better rigidity, and increase safety by being more resistant.

The Hyundai Kona electric: the one we did not see coming

As previously noted, Hyundai's decision to offer a sub-compact SUV with an electric motor was a surprise to everyone. The EV version will arrive after the two models described above, and the Korean manufacturer promises a range of almost 400 kilometers, almost identical to the Chevrolet Bolt.

More information should be available about the brand new 2018 Hyundai Kona very soon as it is set to launch in early 2018. To learn more, contact us today at Gyro Hyundai!
