The all-new 2018 Hyundai Accent was unveiled earlier this month at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. A rare world premier for the CIAS, the global debut of the 2018 Accent in Toronto just goes to show how important the subcompact car is for the Canadian market.
The new 2018 Hyundai Accent now features a more modern design, more interior space, a brand new structure, and, of course, a powertrain that puts the focus on fuel-efficiency while also providing ample power.
The 2018 Hyundai Accent will be built on Hyundai’s new Superstructure
The biggest improvement made to the fifth-generation Hyundai Accent is without a doubt the new Superstructure, Hyundai’s new vehicle architecture built using high-strength steel in order to make it stiffer, thus improving the 2018 Accent is a host of different ways.
First seen on the new Hyundai Elantra, the Superstructure uses 54.4 % high-strength steel. That means that the structure, as mentioned previously, is stiffer which in turn means that the 2018 Hyundai Accent will handle better, be more comfortable, be quieter, and will also be safer. Indeed, a stiffer chassis means that it is more resistant in the event of an accident, and therefore the 2018 Accent’s occupants will be better protected.
Visually, the 2018 Hyundai Accent takes a host of design cues from the Elantra. Overall, it is a lot more refined and definitely has a more premium, upscale feel to it. Available LED daytime running lights, a wide grille, a rounded shape and available 17-inch wheels all come together to give the new Accent a more grown-up overall look.
Being longer and wider, the 2018 Accent has a more muscular and balanced stance, but that’s not all. It also has more interior space thanks to the increased exterior dimensions that also include a wider wheelbase.
There will be two versions of the new Hyundai Accent offered in Canada. The first is the sedan trim which should arrive towards the end of 2017 while the five-door hatchback will hit the market at the beginning of 2018. Both the sedan and the five-door hatch will be quite spacious with 387 liters of cargo space for the first, and 616 liters for the second.
The 2018 Hyundai Accent gets an improved engine
The 2018 Hyundai Accent will be powered by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 132 horsepower and 119 lb.-ft. of torque. Compared with the previous engine, the new powertrain has a wider torque band which means that it is faster when accelerating and also when passing with the torque now being available at just 1,500 rpm.
According to Hyundai, fuel economy has been improved by 7 %. The new 2018 Hyundai Accent will offer a six-speed manual as standard while a six-speed automatic transmission will be optional. Safety-wise, the new Accent gets six airbags and a new emergency braking feature, a first for this segment.
